Little River Medical Center Chief Medical Officer Dr. Christine McGinley continues chatting with Chelsey Rene about breast cancer and the importance of early detection, screening recommendations and common misconceptions about mammograms. Listen below!
What you need to know:
- Early detection gives you the best prognosis.
- Societies differ on recommended screening guidelines, but the general consensus is you should start at age 40 and have a mammogram once a year.
- A mammogram will detect breast cancer before you feel it.
- 85% of women who are diagnosed have no known family history of it.
- Anyone can have dense breasts regardless of age, weight, etc.
- Dense breasts can obscure or block cancers in screenings, so additional testing may be required to get an accurate baseline and ensure you don't have breast cancer.
- You an get screened at Little River Medical Center in Little River, Carolina Forest and Aynor.
- Through a partnership with Conway Medical Center's Mobile Mammograms, you can also get screened at Little River Medical Center - Loris and Little River Medical Center - Health Access.
